What's new in Corbel

Corbel began as cloud take-off and bill-of-quantities software for South African quantity surveyors: measure on your PDF drawings, ASAQS trade sections, clients and VAT, team invites, an audit trail and professional exports. Since September Corbel also reads your drawings for you. Here is what has changed since then.

  1. Bill of quantitiesPlans & billingAssistantDrawings & take-off

Create, refresh and export your bill at any time: doubts are flagged on it, not in your way. Door and window types go to the bill as they are read, and large sets are read 12 pages per AI run.

    • Your bill is never held up

If your rooms add up to more than the building, the bill is still made. A note on the bill shows the figures, with one click to use the printed area or the outline instead, and the export says which figure was used.

    • Door and window types reach your bill as they are read

Types Corbel reads from your schedules and plans are added to your openings for you. When two sheets read one mark at different sizes, both are kept and marked for you to check.

    • What Corbel sets aside is shown, not left out

Area totals, phase figures such as "Existing Building", thin wall runs and openings with no door drawn are kept and shown with a plain reason. You decide whether each one counts.

    • See which printed figures were read

Roof pitch, eaves and verge overhang, footing, founding depth and wall height each show whether they were read from your drawing, set aside with a reason, or not read so you can enter them.

    • Double doors are priced by their leaves

A pair of doors gets a pair rate and ironmongery for each leaf, and you can change the number of leaves on the line. A door's material is taken from its leaf, not its frame.

    • Every door and window mark on a schedule is accounted for

Left and right handed columns of one type become one row, sizes printed as "1 000" or inside a description are read, and any mark Corbel could not read is named on the readings screen for you to check.

    Also in this release

    • One AI run reads up to 12 pages. A larger set uses one run for each 12 pages. If you have fewer runs left than it needs, Corbel reads what it can and tells you which pages are left. A run that fails doesn't count.
    • The Assistant does what you ask. Give it a quantity, thickness or rate and it uses yours, saying it came from you. A figure it had to estimate is marked for you to check, and a change it set aside opens unticked, so nothing reaches your bill until you apply it.
    • Wall kinds follow the spaces either side. A room name changes a wall to external or internal only within its own space, and a gap with no door drawn is joined across but held for you to check.
    • Covered walkways and building versions read correctly. Covered walkways count as covered external areas, and labels such as "With garage" or "Proposed extension" are held instead of counted as rooms.
  2. Plans & billingDrawings & take-offBill of quantities

Pay again straight after a failed payment, window and door types printed one per sheet counted per block, footing sizes read from your drawing, and roof lines that follow the roof's shape.

    • Subscribe again straight after a failed payment

If a renewal doesn't go through, the subscription is cancelled and your work is kept. Owners and admins see why on Billing and in a bar across the app, with Subscribe again to choose a plan and carry on.

    • Window and door types printed one per sheet are counted per block

Corbel matches each block to its plan by the sheet names. For a block it can't match, it asks you to count it or not before anything reaches your bill.

    • Footing sizes and founding depth are read from the drawing

Corbel bills the footing sizes and founding depth your drawing prints, outer and inner walls separately. An odd size is held with a reason, and you choose whether to use it.

    • Corbel asks for your roof's pitch, overhang and shape once

Roof lines now take in the eaves overhang and follow your roof's shape. Corbel asks once for the pitch, overhang and shape, then checks the roof against the plan. Older roof lines are offered an update, with the reason.

    • Wall height is asked once per project in a session

When you make a wall Condition, Corbel asks for the wall height once, starting from the height the drawing prints, and builds later wall Conditions at the height you confirm.

    Also in this release

    • Other buildings are added to the roof only when you tick them. When a drawing shows more than one plan outline, Corbel counts the largest and asks which others are separate buildings. A garage or toilet block is added to the roof only when you tick it.
    • Set the scale or type a missing rate on the readings card. When the early bill figure can't be worked out, the card tells you what is missing: pick the printed scale, or type the rate for an item, right there.
    • Units print the way bills write them: No, Item and Pair. A count prints as No, a lump as Item and a pair as Pair. Only the way they show changes, not the amounts.
    • Openings can be billed per mark. When Corbel drafts the bill, a window or door with a mark and a size is billed as a number of that mark, at a rate worked out from its size. Change the size and the rate follows.
    • Type a contingency as a rand sum and it stays put. Contingency starts as 10 % of the bill. Type a rand sum on the line and it stays that sum: refreshing the bill leaves it alone.
  3. Plans & billingAssistantDrawings & take-offRates & library

Download an invoice for each payment on Billing, move to a cheaper plan when your billing period ends, and let the Assistant walk you through everything flagged on your bill.

    • Download an invoice for every payment

Each payment on Billing now has an invoice you can download as a PDF, and one is emailed to you after every payment. Show all lists every payment you have made.

    • Moving to a cheaper plan waits for your next billing date

You keep your current plan until then, and you can change your mind until a few days before. Upgrades still start straight away.

    • Ask the Assistant about anything flagged on your bill

From the bill card, the Assistant goes through the flagged notes one at a time and fixes what you agree to.

    • Checking your readings is quicker

One message for a bulk accept, a review bar on phones, and the drawing now opens on the plan sheet with the work instead of page 1.

    Also in this release

    • The Assistant shows the changes it has prepared. You see the changes it has ready, and apply them when you are happy.
    • The Assistant points out a missing contingency. If your bill has no contingency allowance, the Assistant says so, because a bill usually carries one.
    • The early bill figure stays put after you confirm. The first figure for your bill no longer changes when you confirm your readings.
    • Fittings are grouped under their trade. Electrical and plumbing fittings now sit together under their own trade.
    • A measurement you typed shows with its unit. What you typed reads back as you said it, for example "You said 38 m".
    • Stopping rate research is immediate and keeps what it found. Stop now closes at once and keeps the rates already found. A research run that fails, or is stopped before it finds anything, doesn't count against your daily limit.
    • Large drawings upload more reliably. Big drawing files are less likely to fail part-way through an upload.
  4. Drawings & take-offBill of quantities

After a drawing is read, Corbel checks each area figure, holds the ones that don't add up with a reason, and asks you to confirm when the floor area doesn't match the building.

    • Corbel now checks your readings before they reach your bill

After a drawing is read, Corbel asks of each area figure: is it this building, a room or a total, a note, another building on the site, or a covered area? Figures that don't add up are held with a reason.

    • Held figures stay out of Accept all, and the floor area is checked

Accept all leaves held figures out, and you can still accept one yourself if it is right. Build my bill stops if the floor area doesn't match the building, and asks you to confirm.

  5. Drawings & take-offBill of quantitiesExports & sharingRates & libraryAssistant

Corbel now reads structural steel drawings and bills steelwork by mass, researched rates show their source, and you can export your drawings marked up with every measurement.

    • Steel drawings are read as steel, not walls

Structural steel sheets are recognised and their red lines are held back instead of being measured as brickwork. You can change a sheet's type, and nothing held reaches your bill until you say so.

    • Steelwork as its own trade, billed by mass

Make a steel member Condition for each section. Corbel takes the mass per metre from its section table and puts the steel on your bill in tonnes.

    • Export your drawings marked up

A PDF of every measured sheet, coloured by Condition with quantity labels, held readings in their own style, and a cover page with the totals.

    • Researched rates show their source

When the Assistant researches a rate it says where the figure came from and what it covers, such as supply only. A rate with no source is marked as an estimate for you to check.

    Also in this release

    • Check a dimension against the drawing. After setting the scale, measure a printed dimension and see at once whether it agrees, in green, amber or red, with a one-tap fix. A ruler bar shows the scale on the sheet.
    • Openings follow the tag printed in the gap. A door or window gap takes its schedule row from the tag printed beside it, and schedule tags that never appear on the plan are flagged for you to check.
    • A zero rate counts as unpriced. A line with a zero rate shows as unpriced until you give it a rate, and changing a measurement's type can no longer drop it from the bill without telling you.
    • The Assistant helps with steel. Ask it to set up steel members by section and member type. It prices them per metre or per tonne and tells you which lines are not on your bill yet.
    • Updated door and cavity wall rates. Internal door frames and hanging are priced at current new-build rates, and 280 mm cavity walls have their own rate.
  6. Bill of quantitiesExports & sharingDrawings & take-off

Openings come off walls as whole deductions, the Excel bill carries live formulas, and finishes, roofs and foundations are measured the way a QS expects.

    • Doors and windows come off walls as whole openings

Each wall is measured net of the openings the drawing shows, as whole deductions with a note of where each came from. Aluminium and solid internal doors price on their own rates.

    • Excel that works the way a QS expects

The Excel bill now carries live formulas, a Source column and the deductions, with lines described in bill language.

    Also in this release

    • Plaster and paint are their own bill items. Finishes are no longer folded into the brickwork line, and tiled walls keep their tiling.
    • Roof and foundations follow the building outline. Roof and trench quantities come from the outline Corbel read, and the bill says where each figure came from.
  7. Drawings & take-offRates & library

An early figure for your bill on the readings screen, a clear way forward when nothing is read, and a Rates page that starts where the money is.

    • See an early figure for your bill once the drawing is read

The readings screen shows a first figure for the measured work and one clear Build my bill button. It is a guide: the built bill adds everything else.

    Also in this release

    • Clear next steps when nothing was read. If Corbel finds no walls it says so and offers your own way in: type the walls or trace them.
    • Rates opens on the lines that matter most. The lines carrying the most money in your bill come first, so your time goes where it counts.
  8. Assistant

Many more of your bill's details can now be changed just by asking.

    In this release

    • The Assistant can make far more changes for you. Preliminaries, section notes, revision changes, stated quantities, payment and finish schedules, company details and more, each as a change you confirm.
